The city medical examiner has made a determination in the cause of death of 15-year-old Jázmin Pellegrini, who was found dead in the driveway of a home in San Francisco's Oceanview neighborhood in April.
A Bay Point family has been grieving the loss of a daughter, 15-year-old Jázmin Pellegrini, who went missing from their home, ended up in San Francisco, and was found dead of unknown causes several days later. A passerby was the first to find Pellegrini, who was reportedly face down in a driveway near the intersection of Lobos Street and Plymouth Avenue, adjacent to Ocean View Park, around 11:30 am on a Saturday.
As the Chronicle reports, an autopsy found that Pelligrini had a mixture of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine in her system.
"The overall findings are most consistent with a death caused by acute mixed drug intoxication," writes Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Karen Zeigler in the autopsy report. The autopsy also found traces of allergy medication and antidepressants in the girl's system.
Pellegrini disappeared from home just hours after returning from mental health facility where she had been receiving treatment. Her family says she suffered from post-traumatic stress due to childhood abuse she received at the hands of a grandfather in Hungary.
As SFist learned in April, the girl's family immigrated from Hungary to the Bay Area five years ago, when Jázmin was 10 years old.
"Jázmin had been struggling for years with PTSD, bipolar disorder, DID, and anxiety as she tried to process the sexual abuse she endured during her childhood," said her aunt, Ametiszt Hajdu, on a GoFundMe page. "Her family had been fighting alongside to get her the treatment she needs, however their voice was powerless since the traditional route is medicating a child and not addressing the root problem."
Pellegrini's family remains skeptical about how she ended up with so any drugs in her system, and they tell the Chronicle that they continue to push for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The autopsy noted the "uncertain circumstances in which her body was found," and could not conclude whether the death was accidental. Police have said they do not suspect foul play.
“We simply don’t understand," says Pellegrini's mother, Marta Barany, speaking to the Chronicle about the autopsy results. "Jázmin was troubled but otherwise was a miraculous creature."
Investigators know only that the girl's body ended up in the driveway sometime between 6:30 pm Friday, April 19, and 11:30 am Saturday, April 20. The homeowners say they came home Friday evening at 6:30 and the body was not there at the time.
